Frank Called These "Suicide Songs"

All reported broken links have been repaired. Thanks for the feedback.

Many fans agree that these two albums are the best representation of Sinatra's supreme interpretation for ballads. Both of these albums were arranged & scored by the inimitable Nelson Riddle, widely regarded as Sinatra's greatest collaborator (and a fellow New Jersey boy). In The Wee Small Hours was recorded shortly after Sinatra's divorce from Ava Gardner, and it was Nelson who remarked that "It took Ava to teach Frank how to sing a torch song."

Sinatra Sings For Only The Lonely is hands-down the darkest, bleakest album Sinatra has ever recorded (despite the silly album cover). Of all the revered albums Sinatra recorded with Nelson Riddle, this is easily the best one, and cited by Sinatra as his own favorite. This album is very much like the man himself, you can talk constantly about it yet never define it.

Hilarious Album Covers

Released long after he became Garth Vader, all you can say to yourself when you see this album cover is "Gay Fortune-telling Cowboy."

I should feel guilty about this because she's a Christian singer, but given how attractive she is, I won't. They should of thought of a better title.

Aw, to hell with individualism and personality! Let's sum up the musical tastes of an entire demographic with just 18 folk-pop songs! Besides, how can they produce an album as silly as this without a single tune by Melissa Etheridge or the Indigo Girls?

This is just damn sad, but funny at the same time. Your reaction might be "Ha-ha-ha! Damn, that's messed up!"

This is too damn funny. Ladies, rid yourself of your fascination with Carmen Electra. Some of you should not be strippers!

Comedy Train Wrecks

Andrew 'Dice' Clay's Brooklyn-meathead persona is an acquired taste. His act has always consisted of racist, sexist, homophobic and misogynistic taunts that were surely offensive to many, but ripe for the repression of the Reagan era. Anyone who truly finds Clay some kind of affront to society is taking things too seriously. I am not a great fan of Clay, but this album is an honest and interesting experiment.

The Day the Laughter Died was recorded before Clay achieved mass success. In 1989, Clay asked Rick Rubin from Def American Records to record him performing in a small New York City nightclub where he would try to perform "the worst show possible", which included insulting members of the audience and heckling patrons as they left the club. The Day the Laughter Died presents said show, completely uncut. Another detail to factor in is that Clay performed this show without any prepared material on hand, he made up his act as he went along (something he casually explains at the beginning of the first disc).

The material is standard 'Dice', lots of women-bashing and crude sex humor. No matter how poor the material goes over with the audience, Clay never loses his composure. This is an incredibly intimate evening of stand-up comedy, and a lot quieter than you would expect from Andrew 'Dice' Clay.

Of all the loose-cannon stand-up comedians, no one was more volcanic than the late Bill Hicks. This 1989 bootleg album I'm Sorry, Folks is probably the most volatile example of hearing a man completely come apart in public. Referred to as the "Bill-Loses-It" show, this bootleg consists of a standard Bill Hicks performance, until late in the show where a heckler repeatedly shouts "Freebird", leading Hicks to tear off a misanthropic tirade calling for the end of the world and asking God to wipe out humankind entirely. It culminates with the now-famous quote "Hilter had the right idea, he was just an underachiever!"

I'm not a big fan of Hicks either (he was more angry than funny), but both of these albums prove that some stand-up comedians approached their craft as more than mere entertainment, and didn't mind testing their own audiences.

The Greatest Entertainment Ever Made

H.G. Wells The War of the Worlds performed by the Mercury Theater on the Air
(originally broadcast October 30, 1938)
Mp3, Mono, 128 kbps, 50.6 MB (Megaupload)

From the CD booklet:

The original, uncut dramatization!

On the foggy fall evening of October 30, 1938, America went to war with Mars!

Adapted for radio by Howard Koch and starring Orson Welles,
War of the Worlds was presented as a special Halloween thriller, or as Welles put it: "The Mercury Theater's own radio version of dressing up in a sheet and jumping out of a bush and saying 'boo!'" But for those who tuned in late, "normal" programming appeared to be interrupted with the startling news that there were "explosions occurring on the Planet Mars!" Reports followed stating that a "huge, flaming object" had fallen to Earth on a farm near Grover's Mill, New Jersey. More landings were soon reported and an anxious radio audience came to the frightening conclusion that Earth was the target of a full-scale invasion by aliens!

'...Some shape is rising out of the pit.
I can make out a small beam of light againt a mirror.
What's that...It's a jet of flames springing from that mirror and it's pointed right at the heads of the men.
It strikes them head-on! They're turning to flames!'

This is the program which terrified a nation. Thousands fled their homes in panic. In the town of Grover's Mill, the local water tower was pumped full of buckshot as frightened believers fired at what they thought was a giant Martian war machine. The true power of broadcast made itself known on this Halloween eve. And no one has forgotten the chilling fear and awesome force of this, radio's single most famous broadcast!"

Scares of Yesterday

Lights Out (Old time radio program)
Produced & directed by Arch Oboler, originally aired on CBS.
Mp3, Stereo, 128 kbps, 50.6 MB (Megaupload)

Two episodes:
Track 1: "Knock on the Door" [26:31]
(originally broadcast December 15th, 1942)

from the CD booklet:
"Arch Oboler hosts this terrifying tale of Ella, a woman who marries a simpleton named Jay for his money and tries, in vain, to get rid of her overbearing mother-in-law with whom they both live. The trouble is that the mother-in-law won't go away -- not even when Ella decides to drown her! A story not for the faint of heart!"

Track 2: "Murder in the Script Department" [29:20]
(originally broadcast May 11th, 1943)

from the CD booklet:
Arch Oboler once again hosts a terrifying tale that warns: "If you are easily frightened by these Lights Out stories, turn off your" This interesting opus takes place in the script department at CBS where two typists named Bernice and Mary are preparing to mimeograph a Lights Out script. As they are about to start working, very strange things begin to happen!
