Contenders & Pretenders

Please report any broken links.

With his shaggy-bowl haircut, thrift store clothing and indie-pop musical interludes, Demetri Martin has become the comic-du-jour for many twentysomething hipsters. Of course, many in the hip underground (or whatever it's called these days) don't know much about stand-up comedy albums. Quite often, those quick to tell you that "Demetri Martin is an absolute genius" usually only possess a knowledge of stand-up comedy that is limited to a few mp3 files of Bill Hicks on one of his usual "I-Hate-Everything!" rants. Those quick to crown Demetri Martin are probably not familiar with Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Richard Pryor or Sam Kinison. Martin is a smart comic, but he isn't the pioneer of his style.

The talents for which Martin is receiving so many accolades for were first delivered much better more than 20 years ago from Steven Wright. To this day, Wright remains the King of Dead-Pan One-Liners. Strangely enough, Wright has only released one album, I Have A Pony, in 1985. Wright does a good job of showing how the Dead-Pan One-Liners are really done.
