Transduction in Tokyo

Be warned, jazz neophytes, this is not Coltrane for beginners, nor is it jazz for beginners. Recorded less than a year before his untimely death, this long journey captures two Coltrane performances at different venues in Tokyo in July, 1966. The set list shows Coltrane's wild interpretations of songs from his earlier days ("Cresent", "My Favorite Things", "Afro Blue") paired along side his equally crazy free-form compositions of recent ("Leo" and "Peace On Earth").

At this point, Coltrane's explorations were so intense and expansive that two-thirds of his longtime quartet had departed. Pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer extraordinaire Elvin Jones had left to pursue solo careers and were now replaced with Coltrane's wife Alice, on piano, and drummer Rashied Ali on drums (bassist Jimmy Garrison was the only holdover from the classic John Coltrane quartet). Coltrane was now also employing the wild skills of Pharoah Sanders to add to the cacophony. Tread lightly, this is just damn crazy stuff. It's ain't for babies, and neither are the size of these DLs.
