The Complete Africa/Brass Sessions was recorded in the Spring of 1961, and it remains John Coltrane's only flirtation with orchestral jazz (a 17-piece orchestra). Arranged by Coltrane's then-alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy, this is still one of the most overlooked Coltrane releases, and its full of hints as to where Coltrane was about to venture musically. It's both fast and slow, loud and soft, elevating and enervating. But most of all - this is seriously busy and often dark.

Let My Children Hear Music is regarded by Charles Mingus as his own favorite album. By 1972, Mingus was miles away from the fast hard-bop of his early years and was now almost exclusively devoted to orchestral jazz. This is an album ripe with themes of death and things-gone-wrong, and its use of a string section is still rare by today's standards.
